Best Camping Destinations in NSW 2026: From Coast to Outback

New South Wales has incredible camping diversity β€” world-class beaches, ancient mountains, and remote outback. Here are the best destinations for every type of camper.

NSW offers more camping variety than any other Australian state β€” subtropical rainforest, alpine wilderness, spectacular beaches, and vast red outback all within one state.

Best Coastal: Depot Beach, Murramarang NP

Depot Beach sits on a sheltered cove south of Sydney with direct beach access and excellent snorkelling. Eastern grey kangaroos regularly visit the campsite at dawn and dusk. Book through NSW National Parks well in advance for school holidays.

Best Mountain: Thredbo Diggings, Kosciuszko NP

Set among alpine ash forests near the Snowy Mountains, this campground provides excellent access to the Main Range walks including the summit of Mount Kosciuszko. Cool summer temperatures make this a welcome escape from coastal heat.

Best Remote: Mutawintji National Park

In far western NSW, Mutawintji provides a genuine outback experience with ancient Aboriginal rock art, dramatic gorge landscapes, and extraordinarily dark night skies. The drive from Broken Hill requires a capable vehicle but the isolation is extraordinary.
